With Valentine’s Day approaching, State Senator Darby Hills (R-Barrington Hills) and her office spent time in senior living facilities across the 26th District delivering Valentine’s cards and, more importantly, sharing conversations with the residents who call them home.
Thanks to an outpouring of support from the community, nearly 3,000 Valentines were collected and delivered to 27 different senior living locations, including assisted living communities, memory care units, independent living facilities, retirement homes, and long-term rehabilitation centers.
Community members of all ages created cards to ensure seniors felt remembered and loved. As Hills helped pass them out, she took time to sit, listen, and learn about the lives behind each smile. During her visits, she met veterans, accomplished authors, retired athletes, including a former NFL player for the Vikings, and grandparents whose stories span generations of the district.
“It’s easy to walk into a nursing home and forget that every single person there has a lifetime of memories, accomplishments, and people who love them,” Hills said. “I had the honor of meeting heroes, storytellers, and community builders. Hearing about their lives brought me so much joy, and I hope these Valentines reminded them how deeply they are loved.”
Hills said the visits were a powerful reminder of the importance of connection and of making sure seniors never feel forgotten.
“They have given so much to our neighborhoods and our families,” Hills said. “Taking a little time to show up, share a card, and listen is one of the most meaningful parts of this job.”
She added that she and her staff were especially touched by the dedication of caregivers and employees at each location.
“The staff in these facilities work tirelessly for their residents,” Hills said. “Everywhere we went, we met compassionate, patient, and loving people who treat seniors like family. They deserve recognition and our sincere thanks.”
Hills also thanked residents of the 26th District who donated cards, made heartfelt messages, and took the time to participate.
“I am incredibly grateful to everyone in our community who came together to make this happen,” Hills said. “Your kindness made a real difference.”
