Youth Advisory Council at Lake County Courthouse

Last week I was grateful to welcome students from across the district to my Youth Advisory Council at the Lake County Courthouse. We began the day with a welcome from Chief Judge Daniel B. Shanes and me, followed by an introduction to our legislative exercise. Students then participated in a mock committee session where they stepped into assigned roles as senators, lobbyists, and advocates, debating legislation with some speaking in support and others in opposition before ultimately taking a vote, just as in a real committee hearing.

Throughout the day, students also heard from Lauren Callinan, First Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney, who shared insights into her role in the justice system. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office provided a dynamic K-9 presentation, offering students a closer look at the important work of K-9s in law enforcement. After a brief break, we heard from Judges Christen Bishop and Paul B. Novak, who serve as Specialty Judges, and concluded with remarks from Janette Tinoco-Ledesma of A Safe Place, who spoke about her organization’s critical work supporting survivors and strengthening community resources.

It was inspiring to see students fully engaged throughout the day, asking thoughtful questions, embracing their assigned roles, and gaining a deeper understanding of how the legislative and judicial systems intersect. Students also had the opportunity to attend Drug Court, observing the judicial process in action in a real-world setting. Opportunities like this are vital for preparing and inspiring the next generation of civic leaders.

Clearbrook’s 38th Annual Shining Star Ball

It was an honor to speak at Clearbrook’s 38th Annual Shining Star Ball at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago. Clearbrook is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities and their families through services that promote independence, opportunity, and lifelong care, with two locations proudly serving residents in the 26th District.

My visit to Clearbrook left a lasting impression, especially hearing someone say, “I just want to work.” That’s something so many of us take for granted, but it speaks to the importance of opportunity, independence, and purpose.

That’s why I introduced Senate Bill 2744, to provide tax incentives for businesses that hire individuals with disabilities and expand access to meaningful employment. Because when someone says, “I just want to work,” the answer should be, “Yes, let’s make that possible.”

I’ve also worked on efforts like Senate Bill 2745, which helps make it easier for individuals with disabilities to access property tax relief and live more independently. These are practical steps, but they make a real difference in people’s lives.

Clearbrook is changing lives every day, and I’m grateful to be part of a community that supports their mission.

You Asked / We Acted – Expanding Access to Early Allergy Prevention

After a constituent shared her personal experience navigating severe food allergies with her young son, I filed legislation, SB 4182, in response to help prevent similar challenges for other families across Illinois. The bill ensures infants have access to early allergen introduction supplements, including egg and peanut products, which can help reduce the risk of developing serious food allergies later in life. Beginning with insurance policies issued, renewed, or modified after January 1, 2027, it requires coverage of at least a six-month supply prescribed by a health professional, with no cost-sharing for families. The measure applies broadly to public and private health plans, aiming to make prevention more affordable and position Illinois as a leader in early childhood health.

Welcoming Our New Interns

I’m excited to welcome our Spring interns as they officially begin their time in the office! This group brings a strong interest in public service and a willingness to learn more about how state government works. Throughout the semester, they’ll be assisting with constituent services, supporting outreach efforts across the district, and gaining firsthand experience with the legislative process. I’m looking forward to working with them and seeing all they accomplish in the weeks ahead.

Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce Community Expo

We had a great time at the Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce Community Expo this Saturday, meeting neighbors, supporting local businesses, and having some really meaningful conversations. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

Put the Phone Away, or Pay

During Distracted Driving Awareness Month this April, the Illinois Department of Transportation is partnering with the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies to remind drivers of a simple message: put the phone away or pay the price.

Throughout the month, officers across the state will be increasing enforcement efforts, watching for texting, social media use and other distractions behind the wheel. State officials emphasize that even a quick glance at a phone can take a driver’s eyes, hands and attention off the road, often with serious consequences.

Between 2020 and 2024, distracted driving crashes in Illinois resulted in 253 deaths and more than 28,000 injuries. In 2024 alone, distracted driving accounted for 51 fatalities.

Illinois law prohibits drivers from manually using electronic devices while driving, and safety officials urge motorists to silence notifications, rely on passengers when possible, or pull over safely before checking their phones.

The campaign serves as a reminder that no message is worth a life, and that safe driving starts with full attention on the road.

Library Grant Opportunity

Public libraries are at the heart of our communities, places where people of all ages come to learn, connect, and feel welcome. To help ensure they remain safe and secure, the Illinois State Library, through the Office of the Secretary of State, is now offering FY2026 Security Grants of up to $100,000 for technology-based safety improvements. These funds can be used for updated security systems, equipment, and even expert recommendations to strengthen safety measures for both staff and visitors.

The Grant Application and required Certification of Eligibility must be submitted as two attachments to an email addressed to ISLgrants@ilsos.gov no later than April 15, 2026.

For questions, libraries can contact the Illinois State Library at 217-524-8836 or ISLgrants@ilsos.gov. This is an important opportunity to proactively support the safety of library spaces across Illinois and ensure they continue to serve as welcoming places for everyone.

Mental Health Fair

I’m excited to invite you to join me for my Community Mental Health Fair, where we’ll bring together local providers, organizations, and resources all in one place to support the mental health and well-being of individuals and families across our community. My goal is to make it easier for you to connect with the help and information you may need, whether for yourself, a loved one, or someone you care about. This is a welcoming, judgment-free space to ask questions, learn about available services, and take an important step toward prioritizing mental health and building a stronger, healthier community together.
