Senator Darby Hills (R-Barrington Hills) issued the following statement after the Senate approved House Bill 3438, which includes a bailout for the Chicago transit system funded in part by a new $1.50 delivery tax on nearly all online orders:
“I was raised by a single mother who worked two jobs just to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads, and I can’t help but think how challenging a tax like this would’ve been for our family.
“For working families across Illinois, especially those already struggling with higher costs, this new $1.50 delivery tax is yet another added burden on every day necessities — All to bail out Mayor Brandon Johnson.
“In addition to the financial strain, this legislation shifts control of our regional transit system to a board appointed by the mayor of Chicago, giving them the authority to make decisions and levy taxes in communities that won’t have a meaningful voice in the process.
“I voted no.”
