Senator Hills’ Bill Signed Into Law to Strengthen Public Health and Protect Families

A new law championed by State Senator Darby Hills (R-Barrington Hills) will give families across Illinois better access to information and support when facing the growing threat of tick-borne illnesses. On August 1, Governor JB Pritzker signed the Tracking Infectious Cases Knowledgeably (TICK) Act into law — the first piece of legislation successfully passed by Senator Hills.

“This legislation is about empowering patients and making sure our healthcare system is better prepared to respond to real concerns,” said Senator Hills. “No one should have to fight for answers when it comes to their health.”

The new law addresses alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) — a serious allergic reaction to red meat caused by tick bites. Despite rising case numbers, the condition remains widely unrecognized by healthcare providers. In 2024 alone, more than 250 AGS cases were recorded in Illinois, but many patients still face long delays in getting diagnosed.

“We’re hearing from people who spent years visiting specialists without ever being told about AGS,” said Hills. “This law ensures doctors are equipped with the information they need to recognize symptoms earlier and provide proper care.”

Under the law, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) must establish formal tracking and reporting procedures for AGS. It also directs the agency to launch a statewide awareness campaign and develop training tools for healthcare professionals.

“Public health shouldn’t be an afterthought — it should be proactive,” Hills added. “I’m proud that my first law focuses on giving families peace of mind and helping providers do their jobs more effectively.”

The law takes effect immediately, allowing IDPH to begin implementing new protocols and educational resources without delay.
