Friend,
I’m excited to share some updates this week! Governor Pritzker signed my first bill, the TICK Act, into law, giving Illinois families better access to information and care for tick-borne illnesses like alpha-gal syndrome. It takes effect immediately, helping doctors and families act faster.
He also signed SB 328, a measure I opposed because it could increase lawsuits against Illinois businesses and threaten jobs. I joined a legal challenge to stand up for working families and will continue advocating for responsible legislation.
With back-to-school season here, remember key safety tips for walking, biking, bus rides, and backpacks to keep kids safe.
Finally, thank you to everyone who came out to My Kids Fair in Lake Zurich this weekend! It was a fantastic turnout, and I loved connecting with families over face painting, trucks, the K-9 unit, and more.
Sincerely,
Senator Darby Hills

Senator Hills’ Bill Signed Into Law to Strengthen Public Health and Protect Families
I’m proud to announce that Governor JB Pritzker has signed the Tracking Infectious Cases Knowledgeably (TICK) Act into law — my first piece of legislation. This law will give families across Illinois better access to information and support when facing tick-borne illnesses, including alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), a serious allergic reaction to red meat caused by tick bites. In 2024 alone, over 250 cases were recorded in Illinois, yet many patients still face long delays in diagnosis. This law ensures doctors have the tools and training they need to recognize symptoms earlier and provide proper care.
Under the TICK Act, the Illinois Department of Public Health will establish tracking and reporting procedures for AGS, launch a statewide awareness campaign, and develop training resources for healthcare professionals. Public health should be proactive, not an afterthought, and this law will help families get the answers they need and give healthcare providers the support to do their jobs effectively. It takes effect immediately, allowing these new resources to be implemented without delay.

Governor Opens Potential Floodgate to Lawsuit Abuse
Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed Senate Bill 328 into law, ignoring repeated warnings from my colleagues and business groups about the dangers of this measure. Allowing anyone in the country to sue any business registered in Illinois, even if the dispute has no connection to our state. This change could increase the number of lawsuits in Illinois courts, affect businesses’ operating costs, and influence decisions about where companies invest and create jobs.
I joined a legal challenge to stand up for transparency, accountability, and working families, but Governor Pritzker still ignored us. Beyond the flawed process, the bill itself threatens jobs, economic growth, and the families who depend on both. Illinoisans deserve fair process and responsible legislation that supports, not hurts, our businesses and jobs.

Back to School Safety Tips
As students head back to school, it’s important to prioritize safety to ensure a smooth and secure start to the year. The National Safety Council offers several key tips to help protect both children and drivers.
- Bus Safety: Teach children to stand 6 feet from the curb and to cross in front of the bus, making eye contact with the driver.
- Walking Safety: Instruct kids to walk on sidewalks, face traffic when no sidewalks are available, and avoid distractions like texting or wearing headphones.
- Bicycle Safety: Ensure children ride on the right side of the road, stop before crossing streets, and always wear a properly fitted helmet.
- Backpack Safety: Choose backpacks that weigh no more than 5-10% of your child’s body weight and encourage using both straps to distribute weight evenly.
- Driver Awareness: Obey school zone speed limits, never pass a stopped school bus, and remain alert for children and crossing guards.
By following these simple safety guidelines, we can help ensure a safe and successful school year for all.
