Residents in Hoffman Estates, South Barrington, and Barrington Hills recently celebrated a major victory after a developer withdrew its rezoning request for a controversial 186-acre data center project following weeks of strong community opposition. The proposal raised concerns about noise, traffic, environmental impacts, and the lack of transparency surrounding the development process.
State Senator Darby Hills has been a leading advocate for giving local communities a stronger voice in decisions involving large-scale data center developments. During the spring legislative session, she introduced Senate Bill 1050, which would require written consent from neighboring municipalities before a data center could be built within three miles of their borders and would strengthen public notice requirements for these projects.
While the legislation did not pass this spring, Senator Hills continues working to advance these protections during the upcoming veto session. The recent decision by the developer to withdraw its proposal demonstrates the impact that engaged residents can have when communities come together and speak out.
