For nearly two years, State Senator Darby Hills has been fighting to strengthen protections for children and close what she describes as a loophole in Illinois law. Her legislation, Senate Bill 2381, would require sex offender registration when an adult is convicted of sexually motivated, unauthorized video recording of a minor.
The legislation advanced through the Senate Criminal Law Committee, but it was never called for a final vote in the Senate. Hills has continued fighting to move the measure forward, and it currently remains in the Senate Assignments Committee.
Now, following the recent arrests of two local teachers, Hills is renewing her call for lawmakers to bring SB 2381 to the Senate floor for a vote during Veto Session. The recent cases have brought new attention to the issue and Hills’ ongoing effort to strengthen protections for children.
“Protecting children has been one of my top priorities since the day I took office,” Hills said. “I have been fighting for this legislation for nearly two years, and I’m not giving up. We need to close this loophole, protect our children, and bring SB 2381 to a vote.”
The renewed push has been highlighted by both the Chicago Tribune and Daily Herald.
