Hills’ Highlights: Honoring Your Hard Work, Fighting for Your Future

Tax Hikes Hurt Small Businesses and Working Families

During National Small Business Week, I’ve been thinking about the local business owners I meet across our district — the ones who open their doors early, work late, and create jobs that keep our communities strong. These businesses are often family-run, deeply rooted in our towns, and vital to the local economy.

That’s why I’m concerned about the $6 billion in new and expanded taxes being proposed in Springfield. From a digital advertising tax to higher income taxes, these changes would hit small businesses and the families in our area who rely on them — at a time when many are already facing higher costs and worker shortages.

When policies make it harder for small businesses to grow, the effects ripple through our communities — fewer jobs, fewer opportunities, and more pressure on working families. I believe we should be focused on policies that lift people up, not ones that make it harder to get ahead.

As budget negotiations continue, I’ll keep advocating for a responsible approach — one that respects the hard work of our small business owners and ensures state government lives within its means, just like families and job creators are expected to every day.

Recognizing the Vital Work of Nurses, Teachers, Officers, and Small Business Owners

To kick off Nurses Appreciation Week last week, I had the privilege of visiting Good Shepherd Advocate Hospital in Barrington to personally thank the incredible nurses who show up every day with compassion, strength, and unwavering dedication to their patients.

Handing out cookies was just a small gesture — but one meant to show our deep appreciation for all they do, often behind the scenes and without recognition. It was an honor to hear their stories and thank them in person for the care they provide to our communities.

Last week was a special one, as we take time to recognize and celebrate the amazing contributions of our nurses, teachers, correctional officers, and small business owners. Each of you plays a unique and vital role in keeping our communities healthy, educated, safe, and thriving.

Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, and I want to personally thank you for everything you do. Our state is stronger because of your dedication — and I’ll keep working to make sure you have the support and respect you deserve.
